Humanities

The subjects of Economics, Geography, Legal Studies, and Modern History are included under the umbrella of the Faculty of Humanities. The faculty theme, established some years ago of Life Long Learning continues to serve as a guiding principle in the teaching of Humanities at Terrace.

This range of subjects offers valuable educational opportunities to our students. A study of the Humanities courses imparts depth, breadth and perspicacity to students and contributes greatly to the all-round educational experience for our young men; particularly in respect to their understanding of the wider society in which we live and its function. Further, these subject areas provide the building blocks to advanced study at tertiary level into a range of valuable areas and careers and will continue to serve our students well, throughout their lives.

The Professional Development of staff together with the continued implementation of program re-writes and new syllabus has assumed a high priority within the faculty. The high standards being achieved in the Humanities subject areas are a credit to the students and reflects the calibre of teaching delivered by our experienced and enthusiastic staff members. Key faculty staff include Mr Sean Benham (Geography), Mrs Suzanne Cook (Modern History and Head of Faculty), Mr Michael MacDermott (Economics), Mrs Therese Kotzas (Head of Middle School) and Mr Rod Patch (Legal Studies).

The importance of Humanities subjects is underscored by the ongoing requirements and need for important decision making, communication and visioning in our contemporary world. The Faculty continues to network with universities, companies and Government departments to provide broader educational opportunities for our young men.

Modern History

With the introduction of the National Curriculum, History at the school is undergoing a period of review. Full implementation will take place in 2012. The Terrace History program ranges from medieval times to future studies and the enquiry-based approach continues to underpin our process of investigation.

Geography

This subject provides for opportunities to further develop the student’s awareness of, and critical reflection of a plethora of contemporary issues. Whether it be the global impact of climate change or a change in development approvals in West End to accommodate inner city apartment living, the scope of the subject allows students to test theoretical knowledge discussed in class in its application to practical situations. Further areas covered include coastal management strategies, eco-tourism, the health of our rivers and sustainable urban development.
