Culture

Terrace’s Culture Program serves an important role in producing well-rounded Terrace Gentlemen and its significance and influence at our College continues to grow.  Indeed it is embedded in our Mission Statement that students are nurtured and guided by experienced staff with a genuine empathy and concern for each student's academic, spiritual, sporting, cultural and personal development.

In a holistic education, it is important to nurture the creative side of our students as it develops self-awareness, self-confidence and inter-personal skills.  Our cultural program expands the learning opportunities available to our men in this important aspect of their personal development and the participation of all students, is strongly encouraged.  The Culture Program allows Terracians to express and challenge themselves creatively and intellectually and hone talents in performing and creative arts, under experienced and talented tutelage.

Participating in the varied cultural activities further enhances the development of self-confidence, emotional intelligence, communication, higher order and creative thinking skills, self-discipline and team work.  The Culture Program presents opportunities in the following areas:

Parents are able to support our cultural students through our supporter groups - the Terrace Performing Arts and the Terrace Debating Committee. Both groups meet monthly and all parents are most welcome to play an active role in supporting their sons and our programs. Meeting dates for these supporter groups are listed in the College Calendar.

Terracians continue to achieve great things and make outstanding contributions through our program that enrich the tapestry of Terrace. The continued involvement and great achievements of Old Boys in a diverse range of cultural pursuits serves as a testament to the positive direction of our program.  Further information on supporter groups or our cultural activities can be obtained by contacting me.

Debating, Public Speaking & Chess

The College has a proud tradition of success and participation in a number of Debating competitions.  Secondary students participate in the GPS and QDU Debating competition whilst our junior students debate in the BIS and Junior GPS competitions.  The Debating season runs through Terms 1 and 2 and specific competition nights are indicated in the College Calendar. The GPS Chess competition starts in Term 3.

Public Speaking opportunities are offered through private Speech and Drama lessons, Toastmasters and related competitions.

Music

Terrace has an outstanding Music Program that provides each student in Years 5 to 7 with an instrument and time-tabled music lessons. This program enables every primary (Lower Middle School) student to perform in either a string ensemble or orchestral band.  Students in other year levels have the opportunity of taking up a musical instrument or continuing instrumental tuition from our extremely talented instrumental teachers. This will equip them to join one of our 14 music ensembles and the opportunity to perform on a local, national or international stage. Boys also are encouraged to join one of the three choral groups within the College.

College Productions, Drama and Theatresports

Opportunities exist for students to participate in drama performances through the Middle School production (Years 5-9) and the All Hallows’ directed Senior production (Years 10-12). Both productions run in May with the Middle School production held at Waterford Place over three nights. Auditions for both productions are called early in Term 1.

Our Senior students also have the opportunity to represent the college through Theatresports competitions during Term3.  Activity dates and venues can be found in the College Calendar.
