Principal's Message Term 4 Week 2 | Dr Michael Carroll
Dear members of the Terrace Family,
As I mentioned in last week’s edition of The Touchstone, the Year 5 Orientation Evening was held last night. It is always a special night, with many enthusiastic young Gentlemen of Terrace excited at the prospect of commencing their Terrace journey. The night also presents an important leadership opportunity for our Year 10 students as they assume the role of Buddy to our newest Terracians. This is a role that the Year 10 students take very seriously, and it also serves as an excellent way to welcome new families to Terrace. During the Orientation Evening, members of the Terrace Foundation presented to our new parents and spoke about the opportunity that each of us has to contribute to the legacy of Terrace – now and into the future. The work of the Foundation and the generosity of our donors is critical in supporting the College’s Edmund Rice Bursary program and the ongoing building program at the College. My sincere thanks for your ongoing financial support of the Foundation’s vital work.
Our Inter-House Track and Field Carnival was held at Tennyson in glorious sunshine last Friday. My thanks to the acting Director of Sport, Mr Mitch Edwards, and all the staff involved in the event, which was a well-run and highly successful one. Congratulations to Reidy House, who were declared winners on the day, and to Windsor and Xavier Houses, who placed second and third, respectively.
This Saturday, over a thousand members of the Terrace Family will descend on Tennyson for the 2024 GT on the Green, an event that remains a highlight on the College’s social calendar. The ongoing success of this event is due to the extraordinary work of our organising committee, which consists of parents and staff. I would particularly like to thank this group for their outstanding efforts. It is important to remember the origin of this event. In 2018, a spinal injury to Year 11 student Conor Tweedy prompted an outpouring of support, not only for Conor but for others who have suffered spinal injury. The ParaSTART Program, run through the University of Queensland, was identified as an organisation that could benefit from the financial support of the Terrace Family and they have been the beneficiary of funds raised at GT on the Green since 2018. UQ’s ParaSTART Program continues to do outstanding practical work with para-athletes, and its research is world-renowned. Thank you for your continued support of this program and I look forward to seeing many of you at Tennyson this Saturday.
Looking ahead, next week, we will commence the Year 12 farewell events before the students commence their external exams in Week 4. Our Track and Field athletes are preparing for their GPS Championships next Friday. The team has been working extremely hard, and we wish them all the best for next week.
As our current Year 12 students prepare to finish their time at the College, our Year 11 students are commencing their journey as the Year 12 cohort of 2025. Over the past few weeks, we have undertaken the selection process for our 2025 College Leaders, and it is my pleasure to announce the following appointments:
2025 College Captain | Cooper Dooley
2025 College Vice Captains | Lachlan Cooper, Rehan De Livera, Rupert McGrath and Oliver Nasser
This is a fine group of young men, and I am confident they will lead the College with distinction. Congratulations.
Finally, I remind all students that as we approach the end of Week 2, they need to consolidate their positive start to the term and establish a focus on classwork, homework and study. Should you have any concerns about your son’s start to Term 4, please reach out to College staff.
Have a great week.
God Bless.
