Carrying Their Light Forward | Mr Terry Thompson
As November arrives, we once again honor a profound tradition in the Catholic Church, a time of remembrance dedicated to those who have gone before us. This begins with All Saints' Day on Friday 1 November, celebrating the Saints of the Church, followed by All Souls' Day on Saturday 2 November, which commemorates all the faithful departed, including our own loved ones who have passed. These two days encourage us to reflect on lives well lived and remind us of the impact that our loved ones continue to have on us every day.
The tradition of All Souls' Day holds special significance for me. Each year, it brings to mind my Grandma, whose memory remains vibrant despite the years since her passing. Growing up, I cherished our time watching the State of Origin together. On those nights, she would serve the famous Four’N Twenty pies and a chocolate Billabong ice cream was waiting for dessert – if Queensland won, I was guaranteed a second! It was our little ritual, and even now, the thought brings a smile. These memories, though simple, are part of the legacy she left in my life and are something I will always carry with me.
Experiencing loss teaches us how to live with the emptiness left behind. But it also opens a path to keep those we have lost close in spirit. Their influence shapes us, inspiring us to lead lives honouring their memory. For me, finding comfort in scripture has been essential, especially in the words of the Psalm, The Lord is My Shepherd. This passage assures us that although we may no longer walk side by side, we’re never truly alone; our loved ones’ spirits are woven into the memories that guide and strengthen us.
The Lord is my Shepherd and I want to follow wherever he leads me, wherever he goes.
In our shared moments of remembrance, we find support in our faith and each other. May our thoughts and prayers be with all who continue to navigate the journey of loss and healing.
This year, our All Saints' and All Souls' commemorative Mass will occur on Tuesday 5 November at 7.45am in the Chapel. I invite each member of the Terrace Family to join us in lighting a candle for those dear to us, continuing the tradition of remembrance that brings comfort and connection across time.
Live Jesus in our hearts...Forever.
St Joseph…Pray for us.
